I served on the USS Edson from 1972 to 1974. We sailed one WestPac tour during that time. I remember Scott Noble who posted earler as well as Keith Dodderer. This is a great tribute to a great class. Thanks.

I ask your forgivness me for entering and posting on your site but I am trying to solve a "mystery". I am in possession of a approx. 4ft. tall brass compass from a destroyer and it was once owned by someone who was on the Edson, I believe hi-ranking. The number on the compass is C-35360. I have the former owners cap with "USS Edson DD-946" on the front. Does anybody know how I can find which destroyer the compass came from with that number? The former owner was a friend of my dads and my dad is deceased and I don't know his name. My dad was a veteran during WWII and his name was Jerome Clarkson. Thank you for any help you may provide.

This is in reply to GBE's #627 and #637. Thank you Ed Wakeman. If WINSA is lucky enough to get the USS Edson, we would be pleased to receive your gift of the "boards" with the ship's name and hull number on them. We will keep our fingers crossed. This is in respose to GBE #633. WINSA received the Navy's detailed critique of its donation application for the USS Edson and we have been given until 31 May 2008 to respond. WINSA is currently developing its response. Most items will be easily covered, but some will be more involved. One involved item requires WINSA to raise significant funds to cover the project's cost. This effort is underway. With this in mind, WINSA is encouraging supporters to make pledges subject to the Navy approving our application so that if we do not get the Edson, supporters do not have to provide a cash donation to cover their pledge. With this approach you are helping WINSA bring the ship to Sheboygan (pledges count), but you have not wasted your donation if we are unsuccessful. To access the pledge card, please click on the home page USS Edson picture or on the how to help button.
Sincerely, Dick Caswell CAPT, CEC, USNR (Ret) President, WINSA

Well, to start off, we have civility and the ability to compete for the best interests of the ship without feeling the need to flame the city we're contending against. In a previous post, I said that I felt Bay City had the upper hand because of the general state of things, and I hope your attitude is not typical of those in Bay City. Sheboygan has its upside - a beautiful and developing lakefront, a growing tourism industry, a committed and energetic organization committed to bringing the Edson here. You need to grow up, son.

I had the distinct personal honor of serving as the last C.O. of this great ship. When we decommissioned her in Dec '88 all of the ships "collectibles" were dutifully sent to the curator of the Navy and much of the "stash" was later passed on to the Intrepid Museum for display in the ship while she was there. The folks who now run the Intrepid Museum must have thought that a Concorde Jet would be more interesting so Edson was replaced by a Concorde mounted on a barge! So much for patriotism! If anybody is interested in the ships final years, drop me an email and, good luck with this project - it is an extremely worthwhile endeavor. ...Gid Almy

No, actually, I'm a Sheboyganite. My opinions are based on what I see has already happened in Bay City (from their Edson-related website) and progress I don't see locally in Sheboygan. When I think about what is best for the ship, Bay City appears more receptive and prepared, and therefore a stronger candidate.

Even though I was on a Fletcher class [DD470] I would like to see any destroyer this close to me.In regards to Mick #624, since he didn't include a city in his entry, I would guess he is from the Bay City area.

I served on Edson from 1981 to 1985 as Oil Lab and Forward Fireroom supervisor I was a BT1 at the time. After leaving Edson I was stationed at SIMA Newport and was present at decomm and watched her towed out 2 of the saddest days of my life. I hope WINSA gets her because she deserves a good home. On another note in 1997 I was stationed at NMCRC New Haven CT. We had a Sea Cadet Chapter named USS Edson don't know if they still exist. But to get to the important point I have the boards with her name and hull number hanging in my basement and would more than happy to deliver them to the ship when she arrives just e-mail.

I would love to see my Edson be saved by your group. I was on her from Jun 86 until we decommissioned her Dec 88 in Newport, RI. I saw her again in NYC when she was next to the USS Intepid. I am now deployed over in Kuwait doing customs for the US Navy on war equipment coming home from Iraq. I read a story in the Navy Times how your group is trying to save the Edson by bringing it to WI. I hope that your mission is rewarded with her coming to your great city. Thanks for saving apart of our history. I will be over to see her and thank you. Thanks again for your support to our great nation and troops deployed over here.

From what I can gather in looking at various sites, Bay City has the upper hand in the competition for the Edson. Most support on the Sheboygan site seems to be from those with a direct link to the Edson (former crew), and they might not care if the ship goes to Sheboygan or Bay City. The bay city site (www.ussedson.org) shows significant progress over what Sheboygan does. Bay City seems to already have a fully developed maritime history tour. Bay City also seems to have a dock already prepared for the Edson, $100K's in the bank, and community support of materials and constuction resources. Why not just cede the win to Bay City and move on?
I am glad to see the efforts to save this historic vessel have been successful thus far. As a bit of trivia, I found this website after seeing the USS Edson starring in the Twilight Zone episode "The Thirty-Fathom Grave" and searching out it's history on the net. I hope to see it in Wisconsin soon!

Hello! My name is Ann, and my father, Mike Collier, called this ship home during part of his time in the Navy. It is wonderful to find you! I have heard many wonderful (and funny!) stories over the years regarding this vessel and her crew. I hope to get to Wisconsin to see her someday!
